Short version: Action BeeMail costs $149 a month at 100,000 contacts where Substack costs free to host, but 10% of every paid subscription, forever. The real difference is not the price though, it is that our compliance checks block a send that would get your domain blocked, rather than documenting the rules and leaving them to you.

Substack is not a bad product and this page says what it is better at before it says anything else. Both figures below came from driving their own live pricing page in October 2026, not from a summary.

What Substack is genuinely better at

The network effect is real. Notes and recommendations send readers you would not otherwise reach, and the writing experience is the most frictionless in the category.

Where it costs you

Takes 10% of your subscription revenue permanently, on top of Stripe. At $5,000 a month that is $500 a month, every month, for hosting. You also do not own the relationship: the list lives inside their network.

What Action BeeMail does instead

We take nothing on paid subscriptions. Stripe charges its processing fee against your own Connect account and nothing else is deducted. Your list exports in full, in a format other platforms read.

Price at 100,000 contacts

Substack: free to host, but 10% of every paid subscription, forever. Action BeeMail: $149 a month, including 500,000 sends, with overage at $0.50 per thousand after that. For context across the field at the same size: Zoho Standard $242, EmailOctopus $278 to $345, Mailercloud $380, MailerLite $439, Kit $679, Klaviyo $1,380. That is a 13.8 times spread for the same work.

The part most comparisons skip

Since May 2026, Google and Microsoft reject bulk mail from a domain without passing SPF, DKIM and DMARC with a permanent failure rather than a spam folder, and Gmail enforces a spam complaint rate of 0.30%. Every platform here will let you send into that. Action BeeMail refuses: a campaign will not go out without a verified domain, a physical postal address, and an unsubscribe link, and sending pauses automatically if your complaint rate crosses the line. The thresholds are printed next to your own numbers so you can check our arithmetic.

Moving across

Import accepts CSV, tab, semicolon or pipe separated files, plain text with one address per line, JSON and newline-delimited JSON, and works the format out from the contents rather than the file name. Every row comes back either as a contact or as a rejection with its line number, so an import never quietly loses people.

Prices and behaviours verified October 2026 against each vendor's own published pricing and documentation. They change; check before you decide.
