How to run a promotion and learn from it
Send an offer and record what each person did with it, so the next one can go to the people who actually respond.
The workflow
When someone: Joins a list
no campaign chosen yet
3 days, held to 10:00 their time
splits the flow in two
promo_response = clicked
promo_response = ignored
- 1Send email: no campaign chosen yet
- 2Delay: 3 days, held to 10:00 their time
- 3Condition: splits the flow in two
- 4Update a field: promo_response = clicked
- 5Update a field: promo_response = ignored
- 6Exit flow
Before you start
The field update is the point. After three promotions you can tell who responds to offers and who never does, and send the fourth only to the first group. That is worth more than any single campaign, and it costs one extra step.
You will need: a list, one campaign, a field to record the result.
How to set it up
- 1Choose the New promotion template and set the trigger to the list you are promoting to.
- 2Assign the campaign.
- 3Open both update-field steps and point them at the same field, with different values.
- 4Activate.
- 5After a few promotions, build a segment on that field and use it as your offer list.
What goes wrong
- Using a different field name on the two branches, which quietly makes the data useless because neither value ever overwrites the other.
- Judging after one promotion. Somebody who ignored one offer was busy; somebody who ignored four is telling you something.
