How to check whether new users got started

Wait a week, then branch: a nudge for the people who went quiet, nothing for the people who did not need it.

Before you start

The branch is what makes this worth building. Sending a "need help getting started?" email to somebody who has been using the product daily for a week is worse than sending nothing: it shows you are not paying attention. The condition is the whole value, and the yes path doing nothing is a feature.

You will need: a list, one campaign, a tag applied when somebody activates.

How to set it up

  1. 1Decide what counts as activated for your product, and make sure something applies a tag when it happens.
  2. 2Choose the Check they got started template and trigger on your signup list.
  3. 3Set the condition to that activation tag.
  4. 4Assign a campaign to the no branch only. The yes branch goes straight to the end on purpose.
  5. 5Activate.

What goes wrong

  • No activation tag, which makes the condition always false and sends the nudge to everybody including your best users.
  • A seven-day wait for a product people use monthly. Match the wait to how often somebody would reasonably come back.
