Before you start

Two warnings, and it stops when they renew. The goal step matters as much as it does for an abandoned cart: a renewal chase that keeps arriving after somebody has already paid is the most irritating email a paying customer receives, and it is the one they remember when deciding about the renewal after this one.

You will need: a tag applied when renewal is near, two campaigns, a tag applied on renewal.

How to set it up

  1. 1Make something tag a member when renewal is near. Thirty days is a reasonable first warning.
  2. 2Choose the Renewal reminder template and trigger on that tag.
  3. 3Set the goal steps to the tag applied when somebody renews.
  4. 4Assign campaigns to both sends. The first is informational; the second is the one with urgency in it.
  5. 5Activate, then renew a test account and check that the second email does not arrive.

What goes wrong

  • No renewal tag, which leaves the goal inert and means paying customers get chased. Test this specifically.
  • A first warning sent the day before. People need time to update a card or get a purchase approved.
