How to reward repeat customers automatically

Thank the people who keep coming back with a discount or an offer, and tag them so you can treat them differently from here on.

Before you start

The tag matters more than the email. Once repeat customers are tagged you can treat them differently everywhere: exclude them from acquisition offers, include them in early access, and see at a glance how many you have. The discount is the nice part; the segment is the useful part.

You will need: a connected store, one campaign.

How to set it up

  1. 1Connect your store and choose the Reward repeat customers template.
  2. 2Set the order count on the trigger. Three is a reasonable definition of a regular for most shops.
  3. 3Leave the tag step first. If the send fails the tag is still applied, so the segment stays right.
  4. 4Assign the thank-you campaign. Make the offer specific rather than a generic percentage.
  5. 5Activate.

What goes wrong

  • Setting the threshold at two orders. Two can be a replacement or a second size of the same thing, and a loyalty email after it reads as automated flattery.
  • Sending only a discount. A customer who already buys regularly is being given money off something they were going to buy anyway, which costs margin and earns nothing.
